Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Partners with Pimlico Race Course

Pimlico Race Course and Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the world’s largest breast cancer organization, are partnering to raise funds to aid awareness and research.

Pimlico has pledged to raise a minimum of $100,000 for Komen for the Cure. 50% of the funds raised will go to the Komen Maryland Affiliate to use for community outreach programs in Maryland and 50% will be used for lifesaving breast cancer research.

Last weekend's Preakness 5K Run/Walk, benefiting Komen, was a great success. Click here for photos. This Friday, May 14, Pimlico will host The People's Pink Party on Black-Eyed Susan Day.

There is still time to purchase tickets and be part of this wonderful event! Tickets are available by calling 410-542-9400.  For more information on all of these exciting events, please visit Komen Maryland's Black-Eyed Susan Day webpage.

Komen for the Cure Lobby Day

Komen Maryland Executive Director Robin Prothro traveled to the nation’s capital Thursday, April 29, joining nearly 200 Komen for the Cure advocates from across the country, to remind our nation’s leaders of the importance of early detection and to challenge policy makers to invest in cancer research to bring about the next generation of screening technology.

“Regular mammograms are a key to surviving breast cancer,” said Prothro. “Yet between budget cuts and recent controversial recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, women are changing their perception that screening isn’t important. This week’s push on Capitol Hill will impress upon our elected leaders that all women need access to the breast cancer screening tools available today, and that we need to develop more innovative screening tools for tomorrow.”

Komen Grantee Spotlight:  St. Mary's Pink Ribbon Project

The Pink Ribbon Project of St. Mary’s County began in 2009 as a small grant to provide screening to at-risk women under the age of 40. During that time the project assisted over 28 women with screenings, surgical consults, and case management. In April 2010, the Pink Ribbon Project was awarded a Screening, Treatment, and Education Program (STEP) grant. As a new large grant program, the Pink Ribbon Project will expand their screening services to at-risk women under the age of 40 in Charles and Calvert Counties in Southern Maryland. “Breast issues are new for these young women as they are not old enough to be involved in the annual breast screening process,” states Tami Gaido, the St. Mary’s Hospital Liaison for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program. “This inexperience, compounded by a lack of insurance or funds to pay for a screening, makes for a frightening journey in the medical world. The case management and financial assistance that we can provide through this grant funding are invaluable.”

Komen Kudos

Komen Maryland congratulates Kimberly Wright, a member of the Race for the Cure Committee.  Wright was selected to become a member of the Advocates in Science (AIS) with Komen National.  AIS is a diverse and dedicated community of volunteer advocates fostering excellence in research advocacy and greater advocate involvement in all aspects of breast cancer research. AIS members participate in scientific review of research applications, in advisory and planning committees, as well as scientific conferences, to ensure the unique perspectives of those affected by breast cancer are fully integrated into decisions at every step of the research process. AIS members engage in ongoing education to enhance their advocacy skills and expand their scientific knowledge.

Komen Maryland also welcomes our newest staff member, Jennifer Lima.  Jenny is the Development Coordinator and will work with third-party events and sponsorship.

Finally, Komen Maryland is a finalist for the Maryland Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Award.  Winners will be announced at a luncheon on Thursday, June 3.  For more information, click here.
