Ride Across Maryland's 10th Anniversary

The 10th Annual Dick Gelfman's Ride Across Maryland (RAM) was held over the first weekend of June. The event was a 3-day/2-night event that brought motorcyclists and others together from multiple locations around Maryland with their finish line located in Ocean City, Maryland. The event was an incredible success. During the past nine years, the non-profit Ride Across Maryland Foundation has donated over $1.7 million to Komen Maryland. In addition to the motorcycle ride, there was a 5K Run for the Fight Against Breast Cancer in Columbia Saturday, kicking off the weekend events and getting the adrenaline pumping!

Komen Maryland is thrilled that RAM has once again exceeded all expectations. RAM topped what was raised last year by $100,000 with a total pledged donation of $300,000. What a great achievement! Dick Gelfman added an additional $1.00 to bring the total pledge donation to an astounding $300,001. This brings RAM’s cumulative contribution to Komen Maryland over the past 10 years to over $2 million!

THANK YOU to Dick Gelfman, all RAM organizers, participants, sponsors, supporters and donors! We are honored that RAM has once again chosen the Maryland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure as the beneficiary of their tireless efforts and continue to hold the rank of our largest 3rd party event in Maryland and possibly the entire country! RAM’s fundraising efforts do so much in advancing the Komen mission to end breast cancer forever and we thank everyone involved for their time, support and dedication. Be sure to view photos from the event!

Komen Grantee Spotlight: Health Partners, Inc.

This year, thanks to YOUR generous donations, Komen Maryland gave $2.2 million to 27 breast health and screening programs across Maryland.  Each month we plan to spotlight one of our grant partners.

Health Partners, Inc., a health clinic for uninsured, low-income adults in Charles County, was awarded a first-time large grant from Komen Maryland in April 2010. Their project, Improving Breast Health for Uninsured/Underinsured Women of Charles County, aims to reduce the breast cancer mortality rate in Charles County by increasing accessibility of mammography services for 400 uninsured and underinsured women. The grant funding allowed for the hire of a new patient navigator, Tiffany Graye, to help ensure that clients overcome barriers that would otherwise prevent them from completing a mammogram as well as funding for mammograms. “We are happy to report that we have completed 68 clinical breast exams and scheduled 59 mammograms in less than two months of starting the program,” says program director Christine Mulcahey. “These results are directly related to having a Patient Navigator to ensure compliance. To date 46 patients have completed their mammograms. It gives us great satisfaction in knowing that we are able to offer this service to our patients.”

Now Accepting 2010 Small Grant Applications!

The purpose of our small grant program is to allow funding requests for small amounts throughout the year that promote the mission Komen and increase the capacity of effective breast health programs. Preference is given to mammography screening programs and direct emergency assistance programs. Other small grant applications will be considered and preference will be given to those that target the 2009 Community Profile Priorities. Small grant applications may be submitted online on a year-round basis. Read the full RFP and find out how to apply online.
