Promise Me by Nancy G. Brinker

Promise Me is the inspirational story of how a promise made to a dying sister ignited the global breast cancer movement. Nancy G. Brinker, Founder and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, shares the powerful story about her thirty-year-long mission to change the way the world thought of, spoke of, and treated breast cancer.

“More than 25 years ago, Nancy’s love for her cherished sister sparked a promise to fight breast cancer.  Today that promise has launched a global movement to end breast cancer, and Nancy is fulfilling her promise to women all around the world.  Promise Me is an inspiring tribute to a sister’s love and a must-read for all who know the pink ribbon.”
--Laura Bush, former first lady and author of Spoken from the Heart

Promise Me emotionally and elegantly chronicles how sisterly love changed the course of modern medicine by catalyzing women around the world to battle breast cancer.”
--Mehmet Oz M.D., Host, The Dr. Oz Show and Professor and Vice-Chair of Surgery, NYP/Columbia

Clinical Trial Recruitment

Clinical trials have been responsible for many advances in breast cancer treatment. Komen Maryland  supports clinical trials through our CRAFT grants which encourage enrollment of women in breast cancer trials. Dr. Ting Bao is studying to see if acupuncture helps reduce the joint and muscle discomfort caused by Aromatase Inhibitors (AIs). In 2007-2008, she was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from Komen National to begin this study.  Currently Dr. Bao is an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center, where she continues her work on the study.  The study is open to postmenopausal women with hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer if they are on AIs and are having joint/muscle discomfort.  The hope is to find an acupuncture treatment that will help women take their full course of AI treatment.  For more information, please contact study coordinator, Nancy Tait, at 410-328-3546.

Maryland's First Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat Team!

The first Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat crew was formed in 1996 in Canada. The crew found that Dragon Boating provided “… teamwork and training that rewarded the crew with healing, hope, companionship, physical strength, and spirit.” There are now over 200 BCS Dragon Boat teams competing worldwide. But until now, there had never been a team in Maryland. Komen Maryland is proud to award a small grant to the Baltimore Dragon Boat Club to help form a breast cancer survivor team. The team is looking for recruits! Dragon Boating will provide a healthy and empowering activity for breast cancer survivors and co-survivors through community outreach, team support and the opportunity to participate in local and regional events. Read more about Baltimore’s BCS Dragon Boat Team, how survivors can join, and sign-up for a free first time paddle session!

The purpose of our small grant program is to allow funding requests for small amounts throughout the year that promote the Komen mission and increase the capacity of effective breast health programs. Small grant applications may be submitted online on a year-round basis. Read the full RFP and find out how to apply online.
