Letter from the Komen Maryland Executive Director
Over the past few days we have received a lot of feedback from our supporters and the local community. We are very fortunate in Maryland to have many great programs that serve our community and fill the gaps in direct services for uninsured and underinsured women. Specifically in Maryland, Planned Parenthood has never applied to receive grant funding from Komen Maryland. With the amendment of the grant funding criteria, if they were to apply in the future they would go through the same rigorous application process as all other grant applicants.
We want to assure the Maryland community that politics do not play a role in our grant funding decisions. Komen Maryland conducts an extensive Community Profile every two years to gather information and assign priorities in order to map out the state of breast health in Maryland. The Community Profile serves as the road map for our grant funding by defining where the need is in the community and how we can better serve that need. To view the most current version of the Komen Maryland Community Profile, please click here.
Currently, Komen Maryland provides $2.5 million in funding to 29 local programs throughout Maryland, of which, 17 specifically assist uninsured/underinsured women with screenings and support services. We are extremely proud of this number and the fact that 75% of the net funds raised by Komen Maryland stay in the Maryland community. The other 25% is sent to Komen Headquarters specifically earmarked for groundbreaking breast cancer research around the world. With an expense ratio of 21%, well under the 30% maximum required by the IRS, we strive to provide education, screening, treatment and support services for all individuals who make up our community.
Over the nearly 20 years Komen Maryland has been in existence, we have invested more than $35 million into the Maryland community for breast health resources. Our first priority remains and will always be the community we serve. We appreciate your continued support for the work we do and hope that you will stand alongside us as we work toward a world without breast cancer.
In partnership and gratitude,
Robin Prothro
